How Discord timestamps work

A Discord timestamp is a short tag such as <t:1700000000:R> that you paste into a message. Discord replaces it with a formatted date, and it formats that date separately for every reader, in their own time zone and language settings. A raid announced for 8 PM in New York shows as 1 AM to someone in London and 5 PM to someone in Los Angeles, with no one doing time zone math. The number in the middle is a Unix timestamp, the count of seconds since January 1, 1970 UTC, and the letter at the end picks one of nine display styles. Leave the letter off and Discord uses the default, f, which shows the full date and a short time.

The relative style, R, is the one people use for countdowns. It reads “in 3 hours” before the time and “3 hours ago” after it, and Discord keeps it updated while the message is on screen.

How to use

  1. Pick the date and time in the picker. It uses your own time zone, so enter the time as you would read it on your clock.
  2. Or paste a Unix timestamp, an ISO 8601 date, or an existing Discord tag into the second field to see what it shows. Millisecond, microsecond and nanosecond timestamps are converted to seconds for you.
  3. Use Now ↺ for the current time, and the ±1h and ±1d buttons to nudge it.
  4. Click Copy next to the style you want and paste the tag into your Discord message.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I put a timestamp in a Discord message?

Pick a date and time above, click Copy next to the style you want, and paste the tag into your message. It looks like <t:1700000000:F> while you type and turns into a formatted date as soon as the message is sent. The tag works in normal messages, replies, threads, and forum posts.

Why does everyone see a different time?

That is the point of the tag. Discord stores a single moment (the Unix timestamp) and formats it on each reader's device using their own time zone and language settings. 20:00 UTC shows as 01:30 the next morning to a reader in India and 05:00 the next morning to a reader in Tokyo, so nobody has to convert between time zones.

How do I make a countdown in Discord?

Use the R (relative) style, for example <t:1700000000:R>. Before the time it reads "in 2 days" or "in 5 minutes", after it reads "5 minutes ago", and Discord updates it live while the message is visible. Pair it with the F style in the same message if you want readers to see the exact date as well.

What are the s and S styles?

They are the two newest styles in Discord's documentation. s shows a short date with a short time (4/20/2021, 5:20 PM) and S adds seconds (4/20/2021, 5:20:30 PM). They are useful when the long month name in the default f style takes up too much room. Many older timestamp generators only list the original seven styles.

Do Discord timestamps use seconds or milliseconds?

Seconds. JavaScript's Date.now() returns milliseconds, so a tag built from it directly points thousands of years into the future. Divide by 1000 and round down first: Math.floor(Date.now() / 1000). If you paste a 13-digit millisecond value into this tool, it converts it to seconds for you, and the same goes for 16-digit microseconds and 19-digit nanoseconds from Go or Python.

Can bots and webhooks send Discord timestamps?

Yes. The tag is plain text, so a bot or webhook only has to include the <t:...> string in the message content. Build the number from the event time in seconds, pick a style letter, and Discord renders it for every reader the same way it does for a typed message.
